TOURING ON COUNTRY 2022

Goanna return to celebrate their multi-platinum, game-changing debut album ‘Spirit of Place’.

Forty years on, and with their messages of positive engagement in Indigenous rights and environmental protection more relevant than ever, Australian icons Goanna return to celebrate their multi-platinum, game-changing debut album ‘Spirit of Place’.

In the early ‘80s, in the midst of Aussie Rock’s golden age, Goanna helped forge a new Australian identity. Before Midnight Oil and Paul Kelly addressed similar issues, the iconic ‘Solid Rock’ stoked a fire for Indigenous rights that hasn’t gone out, while the anthem of ‘Let The Franklin Flow’ was a call to arms for the emerging environmental movement. Soulful, lyrical, brimming with musicality and creative volatility, Goanna mixed classic folk song craft with spirited roots rock, helping to establish a musical thread that remains vital and ubiquitous in Australian music today.   In 2022, Shane Howard, Rose Bygrave, Marcia Howard and Graham Davidge, together with special guests, embark on a new journey, paying homage to their classic songs and reigniting the Goanna spirit once more.

MANNING CLARK & GOANNA BAND

In 1982, Manning was Emeritus Professor of Australian History at the ANU. We approached him to ask if he would listen to the Spirit of Place album and maybe write some notes. He agreed and wrote the following. A long friendship developed between Shane & Manning.

Back Cover Liner Notes for Spirit of Place Album - 1982

"The interesting thing about this collection of songs by the members of the Goanna Band is that the composers and performers deal with all the subjects treated by the classical composers. That is to say the Goanna Band are not just entertainers – very good though they are at that level – they are also serious.

They are making their contribution at a popular level to the great debate that is going on in Australia, and throughout the whole world. They are concerned, as they put it themselves, not just with life as it is but with life as it should be. They want us all to have life and have it more abundantly. Their music is about that great human longing. They sing about the spirit of place in Australia: they sing about the dangers of a nuclear war: they sing of the evils of poverty and unemployment. They make pleasing sounds: they sing pleasing things. They, and the members of other similar bands, are helping us all not just enjoy life to the full, but, to see, and hear, more than we have done so far. I hope thousands of Australians will listen to them."
